This project was a wonderful partnership between the Upper Campaspe Landcare Network and EnviroDNA (http://www.envirodna.com/), focused on the Upper Campaspe and Coliban River Catchments.
Together with passionate community members, we used Citizen Science—guided by Senior Wildlife Ecologist and platypus expert Josh Griffiths from EnviroDNA—to gather vital data to help shape the future of platypus conservation in our region.
The results became a key blueprint for future waterway management and conservation efforts. This information was instrumental in guiding practical strategies to protect these unique and iconic mammals. Once the data was collected, UCLN worked closely with local and state government, CMAs, and the broader community to develop meaningful actions for platypus protection.
Our first Citizen Science Blitz Day was a fantastic opportunity for locals to get hands-on, collecting water samples along the Campaspe and Coliban rivers.
You can report platypus sightings and stay updated on all things platypus via platypusSPOT.
By blending the enthusiasm of local citizen scientists with cutting-edge CSI-style environmental DNA technology, we uncovered more about the elusive platypus than ever before. Keep an eye out for future opportunities to get involved and be part of this exciting journey!
