That’s why our new workshop format offers bite-sized sessions on each macro photography topic that fluidly blends theory with hands-on practice\, ensuring you grasp concepts quickly and apply them effectively. \n\n\n\nOur new Macro Photography workshops\, led by UCLN President\, John Walter\, will be a fantastic opportunity for photography enthusiasts to improve their skills or newbies to learn the basics! \nWith a focus on theory and practical sessions over both days\, participants can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of their cameras and how to effectively utilize them for macro photography. \nFor those attending the workshops\, it’s essential to come prepared with your CHARGED camera equipment\, your camera manual and a willingness to learn. \nJohn’s expertise and guidance will undoubtedly provide valuable insights and techniques to enhance participants’ macro photography abilities. \nIf you’re interested in attending\, be sure to mark your calendar for the weekend of May 4th and 5th\, or the weekend of May 11th and 12th. He has been in the education sector for over 20 years as a primary school teacher and secondary Biology/Science teacher as well as Environment and Sustainability Manager. John has also worked for National Parks and Wildlife in Queensland as a ranger\, the Department of Conservation and Environment (now DELWP – Vic) and is currently our Principal ecological consultant \nAs an environmental consultant\, John has worked with a number of larger consultancies as a senior environmental consultant or subcontractor. He has been involved in flora and fauna surveys\, habitat hectare assessments\, vegetation mapping\, environmental audits\, flora and fauna salvaging (spotter/catcher) and as sustainability adviser in Victoria and interstate. He has authored many assessment reports\, flora and fauna management plans\, EPBC Act (Commonwealth) and Environmental Effects Statement (Victoria) referrals. \nJohn has had vast experience with the ResourceSmart Schools program in Victoria. He has presenting at conferences and workshops across Australia and published a number of articles on environmental education for teaching and parent journals. He is also a past president of Environmental Education Victoria (formerly the Victorian Association for Environmental Education). Combined with his experience in schools\, John has also been actively involved in environmental education in the community as a guest speaker and workshop presenter at various organizations including the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria\, gardening clubs\, Landcare groups\, scouts\, “friends of” groups and churches. He has also presented workshops for a number of local governments including the City of Whittlesea\, Manningham City Council and Frankston City Council. \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nThis event is funded by the NRM Drought Resilience Program – Grants. DESCRIPTION:Please join us as Annemaree talks us through the theories behind Whole Property Management\, and provides us with ideas on how to reduce our reliance on chemicals through utilising biological controls for pest species. \nTICKETS THROUGH EVENTBRITE \nPRESENTER \nAnnemaree Docking is an Agricultural Scientist\, Permaculture Designer\, Farmer and advocate for the natural environment. \nShe started her career in the private agricultural sector working in a range of enterprises including beef cattle\, merino fine wool production\, dairy\, Thoroughbred breeding and viticulture. Annemaree then spent three years with the Department of Primary Industries (Biosecurity Victoria and the Meat and Wool Industry Development) before moving to local government on the peri-urban fringe of Melbourne\, where she designed engagement programs and offered landholders environmental and agricultural support for the past over 10 years.  \nAnnemaree is now a Director Consultant with Plan-it Rural in partnership with Linda Martin-Chew\, where they join their more than 40 years combined industry experience to work with landholders and policy makers to support innovative farming and food systems in the peri-urban space. She also farms nineteen hectares near Kilmore – Dalhousie Farm as a co-farm producing primarily eggs\, beef and vegetables. My research to date has largely focused on identifying the pollinators of agriculturally important crops within both temperate and tropical regions of Australia and the floral resources that support healthy pollinator populations within agroecosystems. I employ a variety of methods from multiple disciplines including large-scale manipulative field and glasshouse experiments to determine the effects of climate change on floral resources and pollinators. DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for an informative and fun filled day – with the expectation of getting a little messy! \nThis final Seed Ball workshop is targeted at members from Metcalfe\, Baynton Sidonia & Campaspe Valley Landcare Groups\, with seed chosen specifically for these areas of the Catchment (all groups will be offered an opportunity to attend a similarly targeted workshop). \nSeed balls have been used for centuries as a means of sowing seeds. The Japanese farmer and philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka used them to reclaim land degraded by poor farming practices in rural Japan. \nThe benefits of using seed balls to plant are many and varied. You simply lay the seed balls on top of the soil rather than planting them\, so no digging is required. The clay protects the balls until there is enough rain to penetrate the balls and stimulate the seed to germinate.  The seed will sit dormant in its compost and clay ball until the weather conditions are correct for germination. They are not likely to be blown away in high winds so suit exposed sites. SUMMARY:Walk & Talk - How biodiversity improves environmental & agricultural drought resilience
DESCRIPTION:The first half of the day will introduce the concept of agroecology and regenerative agriculture. It will explore how these holistic approaches can create integrated land management systems with positive soil health\, carbon sequestration and biodiversity outcomes reducing climatic impact\, erosion and water management. It will introduce a systems thinking approach to farm management. \nAfter a quick break for lunch\, the farm walk will consider the practical application of concepts discussed in the first half of the day by looking at a working farm that has integrated regenerative and agroecological methodologies into its day-to-day farm management systems\, and how these approaches have positively influenced farm productivity and profitability\, as well as contributed to greater biodiversity and climate resilience outcomes for the farm and broader catchment. \nPRESENTER\nAnnemaree Docking is an Agricultural Scientist\, Permaculture Designer\, Farmer and advocate for the natural environment. \nShe started her career in the private agricultural sector working in a range of enterprises including beef cattle\, merino fine wool production\, dairy\, Thoroughbred breeding and viticulture. Annemaree then spent three years with the Department of Primary Industries (Biosecurity Victoria and the Meat and Wool Industry Development) before moving to local government on the peri-urban fringe of Melbourne\, where she designed engagement programs and offered landholders environmental and agricultural support for the past over 10 years.  \nAnnemaree is now a Director Consultant with Plan-it Rural in partnership with Linda Martin-Chew\, where they join their more than 40 years combined industry experience to work with landholders and policy makers to support innovative farming and food systems in the peri-urban space. She also farms nineteen hectares near Kilmore – Dalhousie Farm as a co-farm producing primarily eggs\, beef and vegetables. SUMMARY:Sunday 22 March Working Bee @ Ruby McKenzie Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Woodend Landcare is hosting a working bee from 9am until 12pm on Sunday 22nd of March.  \nThe working bee will be held in the vicinity of Ruby Mckenzie Reserve in Tennyson Street\, Woodend. Participants are asked to assemble in the reserve alongside the Landcare blue tool trailer. Briefing for tasks will commence at 9am so organisers request that you arrive a bit before then. \nTasks include whipper snipping around plant guards\, woody weed control and the removal of a large seedling plum tree. A trailer would be handy if someone has one available. Some of the work areas are fairly rough so wear full length clothing\, garden gloves\, eye protection\, sun protection and sturdy footwear and please bring secateurs if you own a pair. \nNewcomers are very welcome and morning tea will be provided. \nPast plantings and weed control by Landcare have really transformed the Black Gum habitat in this area so come along and help us continually improve this site. DESCRIPTION:Macedon Ranges Shire Council is facilitating the development of a community climate change action plan for the wider district of Woodend (covered by postcode 3442). \nFollowing a community information forum last week\, independent facilitators will run three workshops to guide the community to develop their own plan\, effectively to be an umbrella over all levels of current or desirable action to address climate change. \nThe first workshop is Monday 16 March. This will be the first of a series of workshops to develop a community climate change action plan for postcode 3442 which includes Woodend\, Newham\, Ashbourne and Carlsruhe.  \n Council are looking for participants of all ages from across the district.
